H. B. Fantham was a Professor of Zoology at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg (1917-1932) and Strathcona Professor of Zoology, McGill University, Montreal (1933-1937). He was the president of the Johannesburg Race Welfare Society in 1936. He was married to Annie Porter, the Vice-President of the Society.
